The
World Business Council for Sustainable Development, or WBCSD, is a CEO based organization
for companies to create a sustainable future for the business, society and the
environment. Founded recently in 1995, it exclusively deals with business and
its sustainable development. In the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, a forum
called “Business Council for Sustainable Development” was created to show how
the business community could achieve environmental protection with economic
growth. As a result, the WBCSD was created as a merger and continues to
advocate for progress and catalyzes collective action that can change the
future for the better. For its members, the WBCSD offers businesses access to
proven and workable solutions to sustainable development challenges. A unique
feature of the WBCSD’s work is its sector projects, which are practical
initiatives to work out how critical industries can meet sustainability
challenges. The WBCSD’s Vision 2050 report calls for a goal for business to lay
out a pathway in which nine billion people can live well, and within the
planet’s resources by 2050.
