WMO

The WMO (World Meteorological Organization) is another one of UN’s specialized agencies that deals with meteorological and hydrological concerns around the world. Because geophysical phenomena affect every one in an international scale, the WMO’s role in observing and taking protective measures against changes, is crucial to the welfare of humanity. For example, the WTO cooperates with the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to utilize meteorological observations to improve agricultural practices and aid victims of natural disasters. Furthermore, the WMO takes a leading role in protecting the environment through its programmes. It conducts scientific research and assessments to provide the framework for forming certain policies regarding the protection of the environment. Recently in 2007, the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and the WMO created the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which led to the creation of GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch). Such effort was recognized with a Nobel Prize for their contribution to a greater knowledge of global warming and a strong foundation for measures against climate change.
